Marlene contacted us for help with her two dogs, but primarily with Moxxie her 3 year old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel mix. Moxxie was dealing with some intense anxiety, which was causing her to bark excessively (all the time), and generally be all over the place anytime her environment changed. It got to the point that Marlene couldn’t walk her, and Moxxie was causing stress in the home because of her behaviour. We worked on teaching Moxxie how to calm down, giving her rules and structure, and helping her become more confident even in stressful situations. Check out what Marlene had to say after our last session!
“Just wanted to let you know about the awesome walk we had today. Moxxie is doing good, we met two dogs on the sidewalk moved over as much as I could but the other dogs were on long leashes the owner made no attempt to pull them in. Moxxie let the other dog come right up to her and she didn’t even freak out, we just kept walking. Later two dogs were barking at us though the fence, one bark and I gave her a little pull on the collar, she stopped just like that kept right walking. We also did some sitting on the bench down town, she sat down even before Dante. Thanks again for making me want to take my dog out in public again.”
Another email from Marlene…
“I actually took Moxxie into the pet store this morning . The last time I took her she was just crazy . I still can’t believe how good she was this morning . She waited at the door before we entered then we did a walk around the store. No pulling or jumping on my legs just a nice calm walk around.”

“Highly recommend Katherine at Canines in Balance. We have a 3.5 year old Aussiedoodle who was very hyper and suffers from Separation Anxiety. While she is a very friendly and loving dog, she did not respect boundaries, we were not able to get out or in the house without her screaming, and jumping at us at the door, couldn’t take her in the car because she wouldn’t sit still and shed scream, taking her for a walk was a chore because she did not walk nicely on a leash. Needless to say, there were a lot of areas of behaviour that desperately needed correction. We contacted Katherine and got set up with 8 sessions. She suggested remote collar training and off leash training as well. I will admit I didn’t really see the point of off leash training because I thought the majority of her issues were inside the house, however I am now able to see how they all connected. Katherine is extremely good at taking note of each dog, their personality and what works for that particular family. I can honestly say after 8 weeks, our dog is happier, healthier and more relaxed. Our dog was quite the challenge, but my husband and I can honestly say, she’s changed for the better and now she is a big part of our everyday activities and we love being able to have her around small children and outdoors whenever we are!! Thank you Katherine for your knowledge, and support!”

Lisa and Matt contacted us to help with their young and energetic working line German Shepherd. With two young kids in the house, a senior Chocolate Lab, and busy lifestyle they needed some extra help getting Bear trained so they could enjoy him rather than be frustrated with him. They signed Bear up for our 8 week Freedom From the Leash program to get him trained and able to be off leash. Bear is a lovely young dog who simply didn’t know how to calm down. You can see in the below video the stages he went through to learn the art of “calm on command” by just relaxing on place. Many young and high energy breeds never learn how to “turn off” that energy and their owners think they need more exercise. While exercise is ABSOLUTELY important, some dogs even with all the exercise in the world still don’t know how to relax. So we taught Bear how to relax, as well as taught him to walk nicely on leash and gave him new found freedom by training him to be off leash so he can run and burn some of that energy off!

“Katherine is hands down the best dog trainer we have ever met and we have met many over the years. She loves dogs and they love her! She transformed our crazy, strong willed german shepherd puppy into an amazing family dog we can finally enjoy! If you want the best, you need Katherine! She is wonderful to work with and goes above and beyond to help you succeed. I would give 10 stars if I could.” – Lisa (Bear’s owner)

Name: Bentley
Problem: Resource Guarding (bones and other items)
Solution: 2 week Day School with remote collar to teach Bentley to drop items without guarding.
“Bentley did not have any discipline problems, except when it came to resource guarding high value treats (i.e., bones). Being a new dog owner I thought giving Bentley these treats would be a great way to entertain and minimize the tartar buildup around his gums. However, it was not an enjoyable task because he would guard, growl, become still, and sometimes bite when you attempted to take it away. The only way you could safely remove the bone (or high value treat) was when he was finished or when there was a greater distraction. With the e-collar and the help of Katherine, I can now give Bentley any high value treat without him resource guarding. As soon as I tell him to “out” or drop, Bentley
is able to walk away from the treat that was given, without growling or trying to resource guard.”
